  • Christ the King Catholic Church in Riegelwood is a descendant of the oldest Catholic Church in Columbus County. St. Elizabeth of Hungary, the parent church, was built in Delco in 1915, and served parishioners until 1964. This was when Christ the King was built in Riegelwood.
In 1914 the Hugh McRae Co. began a development in Ransom Township (later changed to Delco) and many of the workers were Catholic. Bartley F. Applewhite, Superintendent and his wife gave about one-fourth acre, on which a church was built. Mr. and Mrs. Charley Fowler of Tabor City, a non-Catholic family, gave the property adjacent to that donated by the Applewhites in 1955. Bishop Leo Haid dedicated the church in 1915.
Through the years the mission of St. Elizabeth of Hungary was attached to Wilmington, Whiteville , Elizabethtown and Southport. The first pastor was Father Frank J. Howard.
Christ the King was dedicated November 22, 1964 by the most Reverend Charles McLaughlin, Auxiliary Bishop of Raleigh. Pastor at that time was Father Louis E. Morton. Riegel Paper Corporation of Riegelwood made construction of the new church possible with gifts of land and funds. Money was also donated by the Catholic Church Extension Society.
Julian A. Altabellis of Julian Altabellis, Architects of Wilmington, N.C, designed the Church, built at a cost of $136,000.
